WWAR Breaks
Out Over Cunningham-Adamek
Rematch
A new website -
www.WeWantARematch.com
- was launched today to gather support
from boxing fans worldwide in lobbying
television networks, promoters Don King
Productions and Main Events for a rematch
of last weeks IBF cruiserweight world
championship title fight between Steve
'USS' Cunningham and Tomasz 'Goral'
Adamek.
The calls for a rematch are not out of
sour grapes, anything but, as on Thursday,
December 11th 2008 a magnificent boxing
match took place at the Prudential Center
in Newark, New Jersey, between the then
reigning International Boxing Federation
cruiserweight champion, Steve 'USS'
Cunningham, from Philadelphia, PA. and
former World Boxing Organisation light
heavyweight champion, Tomasz 'Goral'
Adamek, originally from Poland but now
residing in Jersey City, NJ., the reason
is quite simply the fight was one most
exciting and intriguing boxing matches
ever seen. The result, a split decision in
favour of Tomasz Adamek, could have gone
either way and it would have been fair and
unarguable as many neutral observers
scored it a draw or a single point victory
with virtually a 50/50 split between Steve
and Tomasz being the victor!
Message boards and forums around the
world are still buzzing with comments
praising the fight. Videos of the fight
were posted on YouTube and combined
received exceptional viewing figures in
excess of 250,000 in the first day. Just 7
days later the two most watched videos are
currently listed as having over 235,000
and 160,000 views, with two others showing
100,000+ viewing figures.
It isn't just the fans that claim it to
be special and that it should be repeated
- almost every media report on the bout
claimed it to be a candidate for 'Fight Of
The Year' or called for a rematch, and in
many cases both.
The unusual step of creating the
website calling for a rematch was taken
because the fight was a mandatory defense
by Steve and as such there was not a
rematch clause in the contract. Any
rematch could only happen if both the
fighters management and promoters agree to
holding one.
Tomasz and his management made it clear
that they would only be interested in a
rematch if there was "big money and big
TV". Steve accepts that this is their
prerogative but still has continued to ask
for the right to try and regain his title.
The creators of
www.wewantarematch.com
hope that the website, which features
video of the fight, photographs from
pre-fight events and the fight night
itself, exclusive articles written by well
known journalists that support the cause
as well as a petition and lobbying
information, will generate enough
supporters that Tomsaz's requirements for
a rematch can be met.
