On December 11, 2008, it was a cold wet
night in Newark, New Jersey, but things
were getting ready to heat up inside the
Prudential Center. On this night the first
major boxing event in Newark in over 60
years was getting ready to take place.
Steve "USS" Cunningham was ready to put
his IBF cruiserweight title on the line
against the formidable Tomasz Amadek. The
arena was packed and the energy unreal as
these two super powers were set to
collide. The bell sounded for the first
round and the crowed ignited with cheer
and exhilaration for what they were about
to see, 12 rounds of the most exiting
boxing New Jersey had seen in years. When
the smoke cleared a new champion was
crowned, but not before these two modern
day warriors gave every thing they had.
Cunningham used his strategic planning to
land pin point shots at his worthy
opponent. While Amadek was showing he has
a jaw of steal that was virtually
impenetrable to the Navel officer's
barrage of combinations. On the other
side, Adamek was throwing bombs of his
own. Three of Adamek's bombs connected and
momentarily dropped the Champ, but this
proud American soldier regrouped to finish
the fight strong and in Championship
style.
Now, here we stand getting ready to
start the New Year. And what a year for
boxing 2009 is going to be, but only one
bout maybe missing Cunningham vs. Amadek
II. Yes, Seems the newly crowned champ is
looking toward other opponents instead of
dealing with the one that he should face.
Tomasz has been looking into possible
match ups against BJ Flores, and Bernard
Hopkins. He has even contemplated moving
up to the heavyweight division. Truth is
the only fight that makes sense in his
future is a rematch between him and the
man who he narrowly defeated for the IBF
crown. Such a fight at the scene of the
crime would not only bring a bigger crowed
to the Prudential Center, but HBO and a
slew of big name sponsors would follow.
